Quebec Jr. College spoils P.E.I. Canada Games ‘party’...

BY PAT HEALEY

ALBERTON - The P.E.I. Canada Games female hockey team almost pulled off an upset over the weary-legged Titan du College Lafleche of Trois Riveries, a Quebec Junior College female hockey team, Friday night before a full house at Jacques Cartier Arena.

The Titan only arrived at the rink at 30 minutes before game time, after spending the previous 12 hours on their bus en route to the first of three games they are playing this weekend. They left their homes at 5 a.m. Friday morning.

"It took us a period to adapt to their style of play, but then when we did it made for a very fast paced, entertaining game," Coach Bruce Donaldson said. "Our lateral movement was good and our offense was good we had plenty of time in their end, but we just couldn’t make good. Quebec’s Sara Laliberte quieted the crowd as she opened the games scoring 17:22 into the opening period. Veronique Robert assisted on the goal.

Alberton’s Amber Gaudette goal at 9:55 into the final frame to knot the game up was enough to allow the fans to explode into cheers. Hannah Roche of Charlottetown fed Gaudette the puck then she went in all alone untouched.

Kelsie O’Donnell of Souris added to the frenzy when she popped in the go ahead goal five minutes later. Veronica Keefe of North Winsloe had the helper.

But then the Titan’s Jessica Gagne spoiled what was setting up to be a party atmosphere if P.E.I. were to hold on. Gagne walked out from the corner and whiffed it by Jenna Gaudet with 32 seconds left.

"We did what we had to," Gagne said. "It was a hard game with the travel and we were tired."

"When we heard the crowd cheer for them (P.E.I.) When they went up on us, we knew we wanted to spoil their party."

Gaudette said the outcome of the game despite giving up the tying goal late is a step in the right direction.

"We didn’t know exactly what to expect from them so it took us a period to get things going," the PEI captain said. "In our last game in Connecticut tourney, we didn’t get a lot of shots, so that is what we wanted to work on and we did that here."

That they did as Titan goalie Stephanie Peck face 44 shots, turning away 42 of them. Gaudet blocked 28 of 30 she faced.

Gaudette said the crowd was the team’s "seventh" man. "The crowd really helped us out, especially after their first goal. The crowd was awesome."

Quebec and P.E.I. meet again Saturday this time in Belfast at 7 p.m., before they will face the UdeM in Borden-Carleton at Gateway Arena Sunday at 2 p.m.

Connecticut Tournament deemed success despite quarterfinal loss by P.E.I. Canada Games...

BY PAT HEALEY

BRIDGEPORT, CONN. - The P.E.I. Canada Games female hockey squad was blanked 2-0 by Buffalo, N.Y. Bison’s in the quarterfinal game at the Polar Bear Christmas tournament here and eliminated from further play.

Earlier Friday, P.E.I. secured a quarterfinal position with an unblemished 4-0 (won-lost) record after beating Seacoast Lightning from New Hampshire 3-2.

P.E.I., coached by Bruce Donaldson of Charlottetown, was in tough when they took on Buffalo as the Bisons have compiled a 34-2-2 league record.

"We're easily the team with the youngest population and the girls played really well," an upbeat Donaldson said. "To lose 2-0 to this Buffalo team that has a very good chance to win this tournament, it's nothing to hang our heads about.....but this tournament was a great character builder."

The Island entry was one of eight teams of the 40 teams in the, eight-division 17-year old 'AA' girls category to make the quarterfinals. Doing this was an "accomplishment," Donaldson said. "It helps build toward the process when we play top notch teams like Ontario," he added. "Our Canada Games objective is to move up in rankings. "We think the experience from here will help us when we play the big teams."

Jenna Gaudet of Tignish suffered the loss in the quarterfinal game. Team captain Amber Gaudette said prior to the game against Buffalo if the team lost the tournament would still be a success in her books. "Going 4-1 for a team like ours, is still great."

Earlier Friday, Gaudette of Alberton continued to showcase her scoring touch netting the winner for P.E.I. Laura Mooney of Vernon River and Jaleesa Villard of Kinkora were the other goal scorers against Seacoast.

Katie McKenna of Charlottetown earned the goaltending win.

"We're playing extremely good," Villard said during a pre-game meal Friday. "All lines are contributing and that has really been key for us." "I'm glad to be on a winning team like this and to be contributing offensively as much as I have here, it's just phenomenal."

PEI enjoy Whitby trip

The Winter Games Program traveling 3800 kms over the weekend to participate in the Whitby Tournament.

Game 1 saw PEI vs. Niagara Falls with the Island team falling 3-0. Game 2 saw PEI lose to Belleville 5-1 In their final game PEI scored twice on PP's but ended up losing 5-2 to the host team. Game three was their best game, thus they left with something to build from.

Overall the weekend was a great learning experience for all those involved. The big take away was that it confirmed that we have some work to do, especially in our defensive zone coverage.

Amber Gaudette led the way offensively with 3 assists, Kelsey O'Donnell & Janelle Mackenzie 1 Goal & 1 Assist each, Sam Doyle 1 Goal and Hanna Roche 1 Assist.

Highlights for the team centered around our special teams play. We gave up no short handed goals and scored 2 with the man advantage.

Special thanks goes out to Mike Doyle and Kevin Praught for driving and Ray Cooke for his managerial duties. Whitby, we will return!

CWG Training Team has been allowed entry into the IWHL League

The Canada Games Training Team has entered a team in the IWHL. They will be replacing UPEI as the Panthers have regained their Varsity Status and are again playing in the University Loop. The IWHL is suppose to start the week of Oct 24th

This is very good news as the Panther team gives our girls something more to strive for. Hopefully with some hard work we can turn the Panthers into an Atlantic PowerHouse like the male teams of the late 80's and early 90's... GO PANTHERS GO....
