Female Hockey Zoning...

This is just an FYI. At last evenings (April 3rd) Minor Council AGM the topic of female hockey zoning came up. Minor Council was in general very supportive of the idea of zoning for female hockey.

A sample zoning proposal was put forth for the 2007-08 midget league. Some questions and comments were put forth on the idea. The best being that we adopt the current 7 zones that Male hockey has and put it in place for Pee Wee and older.

While this is a good idea 7 zones are too many for female if we really want to improve the caliber and equality of play for all female hockey players no matter what level they play at.

That being said if the 7 zones were adopted and a particular zone (Ch’town) didn’t have enough players to ice a team they would opt out of the league for a year and their players could try out for another zoned team.

In my opinion for the league to be really good we would have to drop 2 zones and have 5 competitive teams. This decision to ice a zoned team would be up to the Zone committee to decide if they could be competitive or not based on their numbers.

A committee has been formed with a member from each Zone on it. The Chair is John Clements. They are going to study the numbers and bring a recommendation to the Hockey Pei AGM in June.

If anyone has any questions or concerns they would like looked at related to Female Zoning please contact your Association President. They will take your concerns, ideas and questions to the committee.
